With a fully stocked warehouse, you can order sheet metal online today from us. We are one of the country's largest brass metal stockists supplying three of the most popular commercial grades of brass sheet: CZ106, CZ108 and CZ120. Our goal is to be your go-to online metal store, where to buy brass sheet. Whichever form of the brass metal or brass plate you require, as your online sheet supplier uk, we can readily supply and deliver this material to thousands of addresses across the country.
Brass sheet compared with similar alloys, has two of the greatest advantages; high corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Within our collection we have grades suitable for either cold forming or hot formability.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Typically, the copper composition is approx. 67% and the zinc composition is approx. 33%. Brass with this ratio is highly malleable however, brass containing higher levels than 45% zinc may be termed “unworkable”. This only means the brass will need to be heated first before forming.
To enjoy the best formability from your brass sheet, you can choose a brass alloy with a lower zinc composition. This brass is easily workable even in its cold state.
Types of Brass
There are two main types of brass primarily considered when making sheets of brass metal. However, it’s important to note this only applies when copper and zinc are the primary alloys.
Alpha Brass
This is usually made from brass with less than 37% zinc. Alpa brass is more ductile and softer than their counterparts. Alpha brass is the most popular choice for making brass sheets. This is thanks to their cold workability i.e. they can be bent and shaped without the presence of heat or fire.
The most common alpha brass is cartridge brass. Typically, it has a 30:70 zinc/copper ratio. It also offers higher protection against corrosion compared to other brass plates with more zinc in their composition. Alpha brass is generally used in manufacturing springs, screws, clamps, rivets, pins and bolts.
Beta Brass
This type of brass is made with a zinc composition higher than 45%. This makes for tougher brass sheets. However, they cannot be cold worked and can only be worked on in the presence of heat or fire. Overall, it’s less ductile than alpha brass but is ideal for certain household items like door fittings, windows and showerheads.
Other Brass Compositions
Copper and zinc may be the primary components in creating brass. However, other elements can be added sparingly to enhance the properties of brass sheet metal. These additions significantly improve the mechanical and physical properties of the brass.
Brass sheet suppliers in the UK may also offer lead brass. Lead brass contains about 3% lead in its makeup and makes the brass easier to machine i.e. it becomes easier to rework and reform
Naval brass contains about 1% tin and improves the corrosion resistance of the brass against seawater
High tensile brass contains additional elements like aluminium, manganese and iron which all enhance the strength of any brass sheet made from them.
What is a Brass Sheet?
Brass sheet is an alloy consisting of 70% copper and 30% zinc. It is also known as yellow brass because of its vibrant gold colour.
Brass sheets have major applications in the architectural and hardware industry. It can be beaten into a thin brass sheet or rolled into a tubular shape. It’s possible to cut brass in different sizes and apply different finishes to each brass plate for a unique touch.
The main distinction to brass sheets is the sheet thickness. For all of our customers across the UK, your brass sheet can be cut to size to suit your industrial needs. Below is a breakdown of the sizes available and dimensions we use in manufacturing different brass sheet for sale.
- We have a 0.5mm brass sheet that comes in its natural form and a semi-bright finish.
- Additionally, we also have the 0.9mm brass sheet and a 1.2mm brass sheet in both natural forms and semi-bright finishes.
- We also provide brass sheets with reflective surfaces that are ideal for art installations and interior design. We have them in 1.5mm brass sheet, 2mm brass sheet, 3mm thick brass plate and 5mm brass plate dimensions. They come in a brightly polished or mirror polished format.
Brass sheet can take on many different appearances from distressed, brushed, hammer beaten and soft forms. You can also find different finishing options; mill finish, aged brass, bright, dull, mirror sheet, polished brass sheet and more.
Our Brass Sheets: Features to Expect
Brass has a lot of features that make it the ideal metal to use in domestic and industrial settings. Whether you are working with a polished brass sheet or a roll of brass, there are certain properties exclusive to the metal that makes them highly sought after.
Colour Variety
Brass sheets typically come in a myriad of colours depending on the levels of zinc and copper in them. They can appear as a reddish-gold metal or have a brighter gold colour to them.
Alternatively, it may appear silver-white or whisper grey. A higher percentage of copper yields a reddish tone while a higher percentage of zinc will produce a more silver hue.
Higher Ductility
The sheets of brass metal we offer are renowned for their impeccable malleability and cold drawing. For industrial work, you can easily manipulate the sheets to your desired shape and thickness.
Impressive Acoustic Properties
Brass sheet metal is the preferred choice in making musical instruments. It is highly resonant and easy to work with. It’s the reason there is an entire section of orchestra music dedicated to the metal.
Low Friction
Our brass sheets do not wear easily and have a relatively smooth surface. This makes them adequate for use in gears and pistons. It provides low friction and allows for the smooth operation of rotating metal parts.
Easy to Cast
Brass, even in its hardest form is still very easy to machine compared to other alloys. Whether you are hot or cold working the metal, it can be easily moulded in its molten state to any shape you desire.
How Do You Cut a Brass Sheet?
Small pieces of brass sheet can be cut with snips or metal shears. However, if your project requires brass sheet cut to size, order your sheet at Aluminium Warehouse and we will accurately cut the material on our specialist saws using a trained technical saw operator. We offer a free unlimited cutting service on all our products and will delivery with fast despatch. Can You Laser Cut Brass Sheet?
The initial reflective surface of brass makes it a trickier to cut with a conventional laser. However, a fibre laser will cut through a brass sheet with ease. How to Bend a Brass Sheet?
A small piece of brass sheet can be bent with a workbench vice and a mallet. Simply make a bend line and hammer the sheet along that line.
